THE EMPLOYMENT PROJECT

Supporting Economic Prospects Program (PEP)

IB Turkey (IBETH) & Internationaler Bund e.V. (IB) - together with its local partners Alternative Life Association (AY-DER) and Darülaceze Foundation (DAV) - carried out the 'Employment Project' in Gaziantep on the period October 21, 2019 - October 10, 2020, commissioned by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) under the Supporting Economic Prospects (PEP) Program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to focus on creating employment opportunities by providing vocational training.

The successfully completed phases of the Three Million Trees - Three Million Syrians Project in Istanbul and Gaziantep and the project outputs attracted the attention of the Turkish Government and public institutions - the Turkish Employment Agency, the Ministry of Interior Directorate of Migration and Management, the Ministry of Forestry and the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality - supported the project.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to support livelihoods and employment mechanisms for mostly from disadvantaged groups who have suffered the severe impacts of the Syrian Crisis, Syrian beneficiaries and host communities, by providing vocational training and enhancing qualifications. All partnerships with the Turkey Government aimed to improve education and employment opportunities for Syrian refugees and the most vulnerable members of the Turkish host community, strengthen social cohesion among these communities within the scope of the project.

The project focused on the eco-friendly and gender-sensitive employment, vocational training and social cohesion promotion among the communities. In order to provide sustainable results and impact, the Employment Project was conducted in the line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project contributed in particular Goals 1- No Poverty, 3- Good Health and Well Being, 4- Quality Education, 5- Gender Equality, 8- Decent Work and Economic Growth, 10- Reduced Inequalities, and 13- Climate Action and to the Leave No One Behind Principle.

Beneficiaires: Roughly 66% of Syrians and 34% of Turkish beneficiaries experienced the pleasure of successfully working together on the Employment Project. The number of disabled persons trained and employed in the project is the illegal target of 3%. The target on women's employment is up to 30% theoretically with providing childcare services. To take into account the special situation of Syrian women, addtional training modules as 'Bouquet Arrangement and Domestic Type Olive Oil Processig' were provided to increase the willingness and the possibility of women participate to the project. The ratio of female unemployed beneficiaries was approximately 38,59% during the project.

Project Activities

  • Vocational Training (VET Course, Park, Garden and Grove Care): Technical and practical vocational training were provided to the beneficiaries.
  • Permanent Employment: Work contract, social security number and individual bank accounts to receive salary payment provided to all beneficiaries in private and public employment.  The project included training and guidance, supporting beneficiaries with CV and job interview preparation, also raising their awareness of Turkish labour market regulations and employment opportunities.
  • Turkish Language Training: Syrian beneficiaries received (A1 & A2 level) Turkish Language Training to remove an important barrier to the social integration into Turkish society an enabled them to better access the labor market. 
  • Childcare Activities: Childcare services provided to enable mothers to work on the project during the working hours to foster women's participation in labor market.
  • Ecolocigal Activities: Through VET Course, the ecological awareness of the beneficiaries were increased. During on-the-job-training, 52.000 saplings planted for a sustainable improvement of the soil and protection against erosion damage, in addition to long-term contributions to global climate change mitigation.
  • Social Cohesion Activities: Foster social cohesion by building dialogue among communities through measures, common activities arranged.  
  • Medical Checkups: Checkups were performed for the newly employed all beneficiaries.
  • Catering & Transportation Services: Catering and transportation services provided to the beneficiaries within the scope of the project.
